DUBAI, UAE – Taking a step forward in its drive to offer customers the convenience and assurance of digitally enabled travel journeys, Emirates will require most passengers departing Dubai to use a mobile boarding pass instead of a printed paper version, from 15 May onwards.

Passengers checking in at Terminal 3 will receive their mobile boarding pass via email or SMS. Passengers who check in online can load their boarding pass into their Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, or retrieve their boarding pass on the user-friendly Emirates App. The checked-in baggage receipt is also emailed directly to passengers, or available in the Emirates App.

This initiative will significantly reduce paper waste while simultaneously offering a convenient and speedy digitised check in experience for passengers departing Dubai. It reduces the risk of lost or misplaced boarding passes, giving passengers peace of mind when travelling.

The mobile boarding pass can be used throughout the travel journey – in Dubai Duty Free, at security and for boarding, simply by showing the boarding pass on the phone. Emirates agents and airport staff will simply scan the QR code on the mobile boarding pass as passengers move through the airport and onto the aircraft.

Some passengers may still require a physical boarding pass to be printed – for instance when travelling with infants, unaccompanied minors, passengers requiring special assistance, passengers with onwards flights on other airlines, and all passengers travelling on flights to the US.

The option to print a boarding pass is available by request to Emirates agents at check-in counters, if passengers do not have a mobile device, or if they are unable to access the information on their devices for reasons such as: running out of battery power, a system breakdown or glitch, message delivery delay, or inability to access WIFI, network or a data package.

Millions of Emirates passengers have already been enjoying the convenience of digitally enabled journeys. In addition to convenient check-in and itinerary management, those who use the Emirates app can also access digital menus in advance, and spend time curating a playlist of favourite movies, TV shows and music playlists available on ice, which they can synchronise from their app the moment they board to save time.

Smooth biometric journeys in Dubai

Registered passengers can now enjoy a seamless travel experience at Dubai International Airport, where they will be able to use the biometric machines or smart gates to go through various airport stations.

UAE Residents can register to use the Smart Gates at Emirates Terminal 3 and speed through Immigration every time they return to Dubai. UAE citizens and residents can use their passport, boarding pass, or a valid UAE ID, while GCC nationals or visitors eligible for visa on arrival can pass through the Smart Gates with a biometric passport.

IATA: US proposed Passenger Compensation Rule will raise costs but not solve delays https://www.traveldailynews.com/aviation/iata-us-proposed-passenger-compensation-rule-will-raise-costs-but-not-solve-delays/ Fri, 12 May 2023 06:44:57 +0000 https://www.traveldailynews.com/?p=312006 The regulation could raise unrealistic expectations among travelers that are unlikely to be met. Most situations would not be covered by this regulation as weather is responsible for the bulk of air travel delays and flight cancellations.

The article IATA: US proposed Passenger Compensation Rule will raise costs but not solve delays first appeared in TravelDailyNews International.

]]>
GENEVA – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) criticized the decision by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Biden Administration to raise the cost of air travel by mandating airlines provide financial compensation to travelers for flight delays and cancellations, in addition to their current care offerings. According to yesterday’s announcement, the rule will be issued later this year. DOT’s Cancellation and Delay Scoreboard shows that the 10 largest US carriers already offer meals or cash vouchers to customers during extended delays, while nine of them also offer complimentary hotel accommodations for passengers affected by an overnight cancellation.

“Airlines work hard to get their passengers to their destinations on time and do their best to minimize the impacts of any delays. Airlines already have financial incentives to get their passengers to their destination as planned. Managing delays and cancellations is very costly for airlines. And passengers can take their loyalty to other carriers if they are not satisfied with service levels. The added layer of expense that this regulation will impose will not create a new incentive, but it will have to be recouped –which is likely to have an impact on ticket prices,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Additionally, the regulation could raise unrealistic expectations among travelers that are unlikely to be met. Most situations would not be covered by this regulation as weather is responsible for the bulk of air travel delays and flight cancellations. Air traffic controller shortages played a role in last year’s delays and are also an issue in 2023, as the Federal Aviation Administration has acknowledged with its request that airlines reduce their flight schedules to the New York metropolitan area. Runway closures and equipment failures also contribute to delays and cancellations. Additionally, supply chain issues in the aircraft manufacturing and support sectors have resulted in aircraft delivery delays and parts shortages over which airlines have little or no control but which impact reliability.

While the DOT carefully notes that airlines will only be responsible for compensating passengers for delays and cancellations for which the airline is deemed responsible, severe weather and other issues can have knock-on effects for days or even weeks later, at which point it can be difficult to impossible to isolate a single causal factor.

Furthermore, experience shows that punitive regulations like this have no impact on the level of flight delays and cancellations. A thorough examination of the European Union’s passenger rights regulation, EU261, released in 2020 by the European Commission (Study on the Current Level of Passenger Protection in the EU, Final Report), found the opposite to be true. Cancellations overall nearly doubled from 67,000 in 2011 to 131,700 in 2018. The same outcome occurred with flight delays, which rose from 60,762 to 109,396. While the share of airline attributable delays as a percentage of total delays shrank, the report attributed this to an increase in delays classed as extraordinary circumstances – such as air traffic control delays.

“Aviation is a highly integrated activity involving a number of different partners, each of whom has a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of the air transport system. Instead of singling out airlines as this proposal most assuredly does, the Biden Administration should be working toward ensuring a fully funded FAA, a fully staffed controller workforce, and completing the rollout of the decades-delayed FAA NextGen air traffic control modernization program,” said Walsh.

Budapest Airport crowned Routes Europe Marketing Award winner

Budapest Airport was celebrating last night, after being crowned the winner of the Routes Europe 2023 Marketing Awards in Łódź. The Hungarian gateway beat off strong competition from other airports in the 4-20 million category to take the title at the ceremony, which took place in the monumental industrial and cultural structure of EC1 in the Polish city.

Budapest Airport’s message puts the gateway at the forefront of airline route development leading BUD to be crowned Routes Europe Marketing Award winner 2023 (4-20 million passengers category).

Uniquely judged and voted for by airlines, the awards recognise excellence in air service development globally. Budapest’s extensive B2B marketing efforts not only made a substantial impact with the judging panel, but also the airport’s growth and success over the last year seeing the capital city airport surpass 12 million passengers, which is 75% of pre-pandemic passenger traffic. Securing 13 new routes, including five new destinations in 2022, the airport has already announced 12 new routes for this year, among them seven new destinations.

Balázs Bogáts, CCO, Budapest Airport exclaims: “This is an extremely proud moment for everyone at Budapest Airport. We won the accolade back in 2019, and as this is the first European awards ceremony since then, it’s an added honour that we have retained the title.” He added: “Our innovative marketing activities and moving forward together are at the heart of what we do at BUD which puts us at the forefront of airline route development. This award shows that the global airline industry sees this too and is testament to the hard work of a fantastic team.”

Appellate Court orders reinstatement of Fraport Pittsburgh as Master Tenant at the Pittsburgh International Airport https://www.traveldailynews.com/aviation/appellate-court-orders-reinstatement-of-fraport-pittsburgh-as-master-tenant-at-the-pittsburgh-international-airport/ Fri, 12 May 2023 06:05:07 +0000 https://www.traveldailynews.com/?p=311941 Pennsylvania Superior Court rules that Allegheny County Airport Authority’s eviction of Fraport Pittsburgh from Pittsburgh International Airport was improper and resulted in irreparable harm to Fraport.

The article Appellate Court orders reinstatement of Fraport Pittsburgh as Master Tenant at the Pittsburgh International Airport first appeared in TravelDailyNews International.

]]>
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA – On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, the Pennsylvania Superior Court entered an opinion and order directing that a preliminary injunction be issued “restoring Fraport’s rights in accordance with the Master Lease” and directing that Fraport Pittsburgh return as the master tenant for the concessions program at the Pittsburgh International Airport. This order reverses a previous trial court decision.

Michael Mullaney, CEO of Fraport USA, Fraport Pittsburgh’s parent company stated: “We are delighted that the Superior Court has recognized the nature of Fraport Pittsburgh’s interest in the Airport and further determined that the Allegheny County Airport Authority’s eviction by force and without a court process was improper.”

Mr. Mullaney continued: “Fraport Pittsburgh, and all of the Fraport USA family of companies, strive to provide a high-end, and safe, shopping and dining experience for the traveling public. We look forward to further vindicating our rights as the case progresses, while expeditiously returning to our world-class management of the Pittsburgh Airport concession program and continuing to serve the Pittsburgh community in conjunction with our subtenant partners, as we have done for the past 30 plus years.”

In reaching its decision, the Superior Court noted that the Allegheny County Airport Authority’s grounds for termination were “dubious,” that its “conduct was tantamount to harassment,” and “its reasons for termination were essentially manufactured.” The Court determined that the “ACAA interfered with Fraport’s property rights and effectively forced the result it wanted” and that Fraport Pittsburgh’s harm was “irreparable.” The Court went on to rule that the ACAA improperly “employed self-help by using Allegheny County Police, who are at the Airport to protect the public safety, to advance instead its commercial interests to forcibly remove Fraport personnel from the property. By doing so, the ACAA’s actions were contrary to both the Landlord Tenant Act as well as the terms of the Master Lease limiting its remedies to only those available in law and equity and constituted irreparable harm as a matter of law.” Moreover, the Superior Court determined that the agreement between the ACAA and Fraport Pittsburgh was in fact a lease noting “These are two sophisticated parties” and that “There is nothing in the Master Lease to even give a whiff that the ACAA and Fraport intended to do anything other than enter a lease.”

Fraport Pittsburgh is being represented in this matter by the firm of Nelson Mullins and their Pittsburgh-based attorneys Tom Jones, Ron Hicks, Kevin Meacham, and Cara Brack.

Edinburgh Airport will welcome the return of a direct service to Beijing this summer as Hainan Airlines touches down in Scotland. The airline will operate flights twice-weekly between Scotland’s busiest airport and the Chinese capital from June 26 until October 8.

This will be the only direct flight connecting Scotland and China when it begins operating next month.

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “The return of direct flights to Beijing is fantastic news as we gear up for a hugely exciting summer, and is further evidence of the strong recovery we’re seeing here at Edinburgh. This service will be the only one operating between Scotland and China when it is introduced and is a real show of faith in the market by Hainan Airlines. This important connectivity will provide a boost to Scotland’s universities and tourism industry, open up a wealth of new business opportunities, and enable better access to other parts of the world. We’re sure it will be highly valued whether it be by students travelling between the two countries to study, families reconnecting, or tourists travelling to visit new places.”

Transport Minister Kevin Stewart said: “I welcome the announcement of this direct service between Edinburgh Airport and Beijing, which is an important development for both Edinburgh and Scotland’s international connectivity. This direct connectivity is great news for people and businesses in both Scotland and China, building strong links for business and exports, as well as making it easier for visitors and students to come and experience Scotland.”
